Facility Case Study - Converting Basketball Courts to Pickleball Courts
What is now known as Grand Rapids Racquet and Fitness in Michigan, experienced a facility-wide renovation a few years ago. The new ownership laid out plans for major improvements to the aging facility. This included renovating the indoor tennis court area with brand new LED Lighting and Liner applied to the ceiling and walls as well as converting the basketball court area to pickleball courts to meet the growing local demand. The basketball area included 1 full-size court with wood flooring which was removed and resurfaced with a textured acrylic coating made especially for asphalt, concrete or similar surfaces.
The project included removal of the existing lighting system and unistrut that the fixtures were mounted on. Ownership decided to keep the basketball hoops mounted above the court area which meant that a reflective ceiling liner could not be installed around the hoops. This meant a direct lighting application had to be used in order to deliver enough light to the pickleball playing area. The LED System was installed in a manner to ensure consistent light levels and that there wouldn’t be any dark spots on the courts.
There are a few important considerations when converting a space to indoor pickleball courts:
Which companies have worked with pickleball lighting projects before and can handle the entire implementation process?
What is the condition of the ceiling area?
How can you ensure light levels will be consistent across the playing area?
Which company will deliver an efficient implementation of a proven LED Lighting System?
