In August of 2019, The Ohio State University broke ground on a new 75,000 square foot facility which features 6 indoor tennis courts and theater-style seating for spectators behind every court as well as locker rooms and training facilities for both the men’s and women’s teams. The facility is located in the middle of the Athletic District and provides the men’s and women’s tennis programs with a state-of-the-art practice and competition venue, offices, and other spaces that will enhance the student-athlete experience.
Sports Interiors was asked to be a part of the project by implementing both it’s LED Tennis Lighting System and Liner System. We were chosen for this work because of our extensive experience working with new construction projects of indoor tennis facilities and our ability to deliver a world class indoor tennis playing experience with our Lighting and Liner Systems.
Since this was a new construction project, this required our team to coordinate all work through the general contractor to ensure we knew when we could conduct our part of the implementation and the amount of time we had in order to not slow any progress made by the other trades involved.
The first step in the project included piping for where all the light fixtures would be located, which took about a week to complete over all 6 indoor tennis courts. The next step included installation of our Liner System and insulation in the ceiling and walls. Once the Liner and insulation work was about 75% complete, our electrical crew returned to the job site to install our LED fixtures which required coordination between both the lighting and liner crews. Once all liner work was completed, a walk through with key facility stakeholders took place to address any final punch list items.
The last piece of the implementation on our behalf included installing a Lighting Control System - a smart system designed to take court scheduling, ambient light and occupancy into account for ideal lighting levels, while also saving energy and money. This will allow Ohio State to increase the light levels for Men’s and Women’s matches while also being able to dim the lighting down when collegiate matches are not taking place.
One of Ohio State’s initiatives with the new indoor tennis facility was to deliver light levels appropriate for the level of tennis being played there. The combination of the Sports Interiors LED Lighting System and Liner System helped to ensure light levels were well over 100 foot candles and were evenly distributed across the playing area.
